Asheville (should have posted yesterday, 8/30/13)

Well, I never even got out of the bag in Asheville!   Those big city folks aren't as much fun as country peoples.   Along the way we went through the Ocoee Gorge, so I got to see the crazy river rafters.  That wore me out, so, when we got home, I crawled into one of the doll beds.  I couldn't sleep 'cause my eyes don't close!

AWWWWWWWWWWW

Last night we were watching Nat Geo when a program about elephants came on.  I was all ears (yuck, yuck!)    So here was a group of elephants walking along when one went into labor.  She would take backward steps and lift a leg.  The others gathered around her.  Suddenly: SPLOOSH!
There was the baby on the ground.  Some of the other females had wet spots on their cheeks as the enormity of the event activated their lachrymal glands.   I hope I've been neutered.

OOPS !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I neglected to post yesterday.  Such is the life of a busy elephant!   Today we're going to Asheville for Larry to see a doctor.  I'm sitting at the door all ready to go,  with a handbag over my arm, just like the queen.

New friends

Today Pat said, "Jump in the bag, Sally.  I'm going to have my hair cut, and there might be a photo op."    She carries me around in a tapestry tote bag with a pattern of (you guessed it) cats.  When we walked in the door at the salon,  she said,  "Don't worry.  I'm not moving in, and I'm not selling anything." One of the women asked,  "What do you have there?   Is it your puppy?"    "No,  it's an elephant."    The woman actually then asked, "Is it a baby elephant?"     Even in Murphy, there ain't no cure for stupid.      Anyway,  I got bored and found these lovely giraffes.  We got to talking and discovered none of us had ever been in a zoo or circus!

Fall's coming

Yesterday it was 57 °  when we got up,  so I borrowed a winter jacket from the dolls and was very cozy.     Want to know how I made the degree symbol?   Just hold the "Alt" and type in 0176!

What do you think?

I wondered how I would look with teeth, so I tried these on.  They don't scare you, do they?

Speaking of teapots...

Of course, Crazy Cat Lady has a collection of cat teapots,  so I posed among them for you to see.
I even wore a cat mask to blend in!

End of summer heat

Land sakes, child,  sometimes it gets so bothersomely hot I declare I'm 'bout to have a fit of the vapors.   What's a girl to do?    Bless her heart, before I could swoon dead away,  Pat loaned me this fan.

It's a rabbit, right? No, it's a duck?

This critter lives in the doll room.    Family lore has it that Grandpa Golden made it, and it's been confusing children for generations.    Whatever it is,  I like it!

(I THINK)

Pat, tek (temporary elephant keeper)

Because I'm an elephant, I don't go to school.

However, you humans have to go for years and years.   Here's a picture of  Pat's brother's grandchildren, ready for their first day.    They are Emma (6)  and Liam (4).

Quiet rainy Sunday

I think I'll just read.   The title may not be appropriate for August, but the book is my size.  Don't I look smart wearing glasses?

Do you remember Elmer the Elephant?

Pat says probably not, because she watched him when she was a little kid, and she's older than all you cousins.  Anyway, here's his picture and a little bit about the show.  I think he's really a hunk!

John R. Conrad

Hosted '50s children's show

TV pioneer paired with `Elmer the Elephant' to deliver laughs and a positive message

    • For a generation growing up in the Chicago area during the 1950s, children's television pioneer John R. Conrad--along with his elephant pal, Elmer--was as good a reason as milk and cookies to hustle home from school each day.
On weekday afternoons from 1951 to 1956, Mr. Conrad was the host of WNBQ-Ch. 5's "Elmer the Elephant," one of Chicago's most popular children's shows of the era.

Not going to tonight's concert because it's being held in a barn.

I don't want to be mistaken for a farm animal.   However, if I were going,  I think this dress would be appropriate.

Is it just me ...

or it there something wrong with this rocker?   I couldn't get it to rock, and neither could this teddy bear, even with Chissie's help.

Wednesday tradition

On Wednesdays Larry and Pat have lunch with their friends, Betsy and Cliff.  They usually go to Downtown Pizza in Murphy for the pizza and salad buffet.  I got to go along, but I wasn't impressed by the pizza.   What I wanted to do was play in the arcade in the back room, because look at all the great prizes !!!

Sammie's vet visit

Today the youngest cat had an appointment at the vet's office to have an exam and shots.  I went along to calm her down and to see what happens at a doctor's office.  Believe me,  I hope I never have to be a patient!   Poor Sammie got poked, prodded, and shot.   Sure, she's the cat who bit Pat's leg off two years ago,  but mostly she's good and doesn't deserve torture.  When we were leaving the exam room,  Dr. McClearen said,  "Enjoy Sally's ride!"    (Get it?  Sally's ride ... Sally Ride ... Ride, Sally, ride)     As you see, it took Pat, Kathy the vet tech, and me to hold Sammie down.

Exercise ????

I'm considering starting an exercise program, but can't decide what to do.   Should I go with tennis or boxing?

Downtown Murphy

Yesterday we went downtown so Pat could attend the birthday party of Boo,  the bookstore cat.  Guests were asked to take towels, kitty litter, or cat or dog food for the shelter animals.   Boo was hiding in the waste basket in the office at the back of the store.  He's a handsome odd-eyed white Turkish Angora, so he should be strutting!   Pat had a piece of chocolate cake, but I didn't get any.  Then we went to Linger Awhile,  the store behind the bookstore, to see Jill.   Her shop is really cool!  She stocks things like antique Christmas ornaments,  old quilts,  black folk art,  teddy bears, and dolls and critters she makes out of pieces of worn beyond repair quilts.   Pat hadn't seen Jill in a while, so I looked around while they jabbered.   I settled onto the lap of this sweet rag doll and almost fell asleep.   The other picture is of Boo when he was a kitten and friendly.  He has his own comic strip in the local paper!

Cornbread Ted and the Butterbeans

Last night Pat told me Larry was stable and it was OK to leave him for a couple of hours, so she took me with her to the concert.  I posed on the stage with a bumper sticker for the group, but it didn't come out clear, so we took another after we got home.  There was so much stomping going on up on the stage that I didn't stay for the performance.  I hid in the car!

Also,  here's a picture of the audience last night, with someone you know in the front row!

Poor Larry

Today Larry had surgery on his arm to relieve his cubital tunnel pain.  He's home and sleeping, but Pat's leaving him to go to a concert tonight.  This doesn't seem right, so I'm standing by with a hot water bottle in case he needs help.

Elephants galore!

Among the boxes of doll clothes I found this nightgown with an elephant print!  Pat say it's probably 50 years old, and her mom made it.    Then in the box marked "Doll Toys, Hangers, and Correspondence",  I found this old elephant doll, made of flannel.   The dolls are very generous about letting me try things on and play with them.   Of course, I'm not easy to dress , with my trunk, ball, ears and front legs.  Some things I just drape across me.  Others I step into and pull up.   You know that technique, right, girls?

Earlier post brought over from Facebook of July 25

Hey, y'all ! (2 days in North Carolina, and I have a southern accent already.) My new guardian, Crazy Cat Lady, says I'll be too busy this year for a brief summary on Christmas in July 2014, so she set up this account for me. She let me have a chair so I could "set a spell" on the front porch .

Earlier post brought over from Facebook of July 26

This time when I traveled to my new home, I wasn't the only one in the box! It was a really big box on wheels, and Crazy Cat Lady, her husband, and 4 cats were in the box with me. Here's a picture of me getting out of the box, so you can see how big it is compared to me. Oh, get this: CCL's husband is another bearded guy, and he's not even a Golden!

Earlier post brought over from Facebook of July 27

Hey, Marti and Jeff! Remember that pile of squash the Crazy Cat Lady dumped on your campsite? Turns out that was just the beginning. She also has mutant zucchini, and the giant cucumbers are beginning to come in. Here I'm trying to stay out of the way.

Such a great deal for $1 !!!!!!!!!!!

I got this super bed/surrogate mother at a garage sale!

He's so cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So yesterday we went to Monte Alban, a Mexican restaurant in Murphy.  Pat wanted to take my picture with the portrait of the Dos Equis guy! Maybe he'll put me in his next commercial!  Larry and their friends were embarrassed (I don't know why.  I'm always on my best behavior.), but Pat had no problem with taking me out of my bag for the photo.  She told the hostess, "It's a family thing."   That always works with women.  On the way back to the table, the waiter said, "That's a beautiful elephant!"
